Aaron Rai Wins Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Thrilling Play-Off Battle Against Tommy Fleetwood

Aaron Rai displayed exceptional nerve to claim the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on Sunday, beating Tommy Fleetwood in a dramatic playoff after a topsy-turvy last day of competition.

The Englishman sank a crucial birdie from around eight foot to seal the victory, echoing his only previous Rolex Series triumph at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was likewise a playoff win against Fleetwood.

Final Round Drama

Rai started the last day with a one-shot advantage over fellow Englishman Fleetwood and Danish golfer Højgaard. He ended up with a total score of twenty-under after a up-and-down, five-under final round that included seven birdies and two bogeys.

Fleetwood moved one shot clear with two holes remaining after a birdie on the sixteenth, but Rai tied it up again on the 17th and then failed to convert a 10-foot birdie putt to win outright on the final hole.

Playoff Decider

This led to a play-off at the Yas Links course where the eventual winner prevailed to take the title and $1.5m (£1.13m) in winnings.

{“Tommy is a world-class golfer and an even more individual. To compete alongside him the final two rounds was truly memorable,” stated the winner, the current 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so focused on your game and maintaining focus, it’s difficult to describe at the present how it is. It is incredible to be stood here.”

Notable Contenders

The Northern Irish star left himself a bit too far to make up, finishing a stroke behind in a shared third place with Højgaard, after a stunning 62 closing round of 62. It was McIlroy’s lowest-ever round on the European Tour, comprising eight birdie putts and one eagle.

The Danish golfer carded six birdies of his as well, but his hopes of topping the standings were hit by a dropped shot on the twelfth. England’s Richard Mansell produced an superb final-round 63 to end up in a tie for fifth place with Australia’s Daniel Hillier.
