Roughly 50 automobiles have been marked with what seems to be blood from a person in the German town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Automobiles, exterior walls and postboxes were defaced, in some cases with swastikas, they stated in a statement.
Officers say they were notified during the night on Wednesday, when a individual noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored fluid.
The substance had been applied in the shape of a banned symbol, they added.
Law enforcement then found many other vandalized vehicles and building exteriors in the surrounding area.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under regulations banning the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police state preliminary tests show the liquid was probably human bodily fluid.
"There is still no lead as to its origin; investigators are presently not informed of any physical harm in relation with the occurrence," they stated.
Municipal representatives stated they were working "to unravel the incident" and have asked to the public for tips.
A senior official said the incident left him without words and required to be addressed rapidly.
"This event affects the very heart of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the far-right violent incident half a decade ago," he posted on a platform, recalling the murder of nine individuals by a gunman aiming at people of migrant background in five years prior.
