Courageous Rail Staff Member Receives Severe Wounds Amid Multiple Knife Attack on High-Speed Service

A courageous railway staff member who stepped in to save passengers during a mass knife attack on a express train has suffered critical wounds, police stated on Sunday.

Particulars of the Frightening Event

CCTV footage allegedly depicts the staff member trying to halt the assailant as the train journeyed between Peterborough and another station in the county. Witnesses described a frightening 14-minute duration after the train left Peterborough, with bloodied passengers running through carriages.

The individual, a 32-year-old British national from Peterborough, is in custody for questioning. Police announced a major event on the 6:25 pm service from Peterborough to King's Cross in downtown London.

Emergency Response and Aftermath

The incident on Saturday night led to 11 people being cared for in medical facilities after the train made an unscheduled stop at the station in Huntingdon. Five people have since been released from hospital.

A bystander recorded the suspect waving a large knife and being subdued with a Taser as he confronted officers on the station. He was reportedly heard shouting, "End my life, end my life."

“This was a horrific attack that has had a wide impact. We are thinking of the victims and their families – especially the brave employee of train personnel whose family are being supported by specialist personnel,” said a high-ranking law enforcement officer.

Union Response and Appeals for Action

Train unions were quick to commend staff and call for more measures. One union official said he would be “requesting immediate meetings with authorities, train companies and law enforcement to ensure that we have the best available assistance, resources and robust protocols in place”.

A different union leader urged the train operator and authorities “to move swiftly to review security, to help the impacted employees, and to ensure that no incident like this happens again”.

Operator Praised for Quick Action

The train driver who stopped the train at Huntingdon was described as being “deeply affected” but “good”, and has been praised by association officials for doing “exactly the right thing”.

“The driver did not halt the train in the center of two stations where it’s clearly difficult for the emergency services to reach, but he continued traveling until he arrived to Huntingdon, where the assistance was almost already there,” explained a association official.

Further Details

Authorities stated they got the initial emergency calls at 7:39 pm, and the train was compelled to make an unscheduled stop in Huntingdon at 7:50 pm.

An witness described initially wondering if the situation was a Halloween joke, but soon understood from people's expressions that it was serious.

Police have stated there is nothing to indicate the incident was a terror-related incident and have requested the public to come forward with any additional details.

Train operations on the impacted line are anticipated to have disruption until Monday, with travelers recommended to postpone their travel where possible.

Individuals with details that could help the investigation are encouraged to contact police by sending a message a designated number with a reference code.
