Explosion Takes 3 Police Officers While Executing Property Removal Procedure in Italy

A trio of officers lost their lives and more than a dozen others were hurt in what appears to be premeditated gas explosion at a farmhouse in northern Italy.

Sequence of Events

The detonation was triggered as officers and emergency crews went into the property in the vicinity of the Verona region to enforce an court-ordered eviction for a brother and sister trio who were older adults.

Each of the three victims who died served in the Carabinieri force.

Investigation Developments

A man and a woman were arrested at the location and one more individual who ran away after the blast was located not long after. The trio have been transported to medical facility.

The explosion could be heard approximately 5 kilometers away and images from the area displayed the building reduced to a pile of rubble.

“We are in a period of mourning,” stated the Minister of the Interior Minister Piantedosi, who noted that efforts had been made to displace the three siblings in the past.

Property Situation

The leader of the Veneto area, the regional head, stated the farmhouse was subject to an removal notice due to financial obligations accrued by the three owners.

Mediators had been sent to engage the family members who had barricaded themselves into the house. When the officers came shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators think a family member caused the blast.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” provincial police commander the police commander stated to the media.

“A gas cylinder had been ignited, and the blast immediately struck our personnel,” he said.

Incendiary devices were also discovered at the site, the Interior Minister said.

Impact Assessment

Injured individuals by the incident consisted of 11 other members of the Carabinieri as well as three members of national police and a firefighter.

Based on information from the local prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a poor condition and had was without power.

The prosecutor thought the explosion had happened on a floor above the doorway and stated to the press it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Shortly before the blast, he mentioned officers had “detected a whistling noise, likely the gas canisters being turned on”.

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” local residents informed local news, mentioning that the three had previously threatened to “detonate the property” rather than vacate the property.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

Defence Minister the Defence Minister joined other elected representatives in paying tribute to the three men who had lost their lives in the performance of their duties.
