Nintendo and Illumination released the first full-length trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie this Wednesday. The reveal happened in a special Nintendo Direct that centered on the forthcoming animated feature.
The follow-up to the 2023 hit film The Super Mario Bros. Movie, this latest chapter will propel Mario to the outer limits of the universe. Along the way, he discovers a fresh princess character and a powerful new opponent in Bowser Jr., the heir to Bowser's throne.
Similar to the Wii console classics that serve as its inspiration, Mario will leave behind the well-known surroundings of the Mushroom Kingdom to travel across the galaxy. On his epic voyage, he will meet again some recognizable characters, such as the Luma, a fan favorite from the original cinematic release.
But it appears Mario and his brother Luigi will face a fresh enemy in the form of Bowser's angry little boy, who apparently commands metallic abilities. Worth mentioning, the preview for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is not exclusively centered on Galaxy-inspired imagery; it also includes nods to additional popular titles like Super Mario Odyssey and Bowser's Fury.
The movie will welcome back of the initial voice actors, including Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek.
New additions to the ensemble for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie are Brie Larson, who will bring to life Rosalina, and Benny Safdie, set to play Bowser Jr. This was confirmed by Chris Meledandri, the chief executive of Illumination.
The upcoming Mario film is set to release close to the 40-year celebration of the original Super Mario Bros. game. Apart from the cinematic release, 2026 is shaping up to be a significant year for Mario and his allies.
The company has a trio of new releases publicly declared for the upcoming year, such as Mario Tennis Fever, a release on Switch 2 of Super Mario Bros. Wonder, and a fresh Yoshi side-scroller titled Yoshi and the Mysterious Book.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is officially set to be released on April 3, 2026.
