Following Microsoft's recent announcement of a major restructuring of its Game Pass plans, the tech giant has clarified what the updates signify for players who still have an Xbox Game Pass for Console active. According to Xbox, anyone who currently maintains a grandfathered Console subscription with automatic billing enabled will not be affected by the updated cost adjustments.
Just a few days ago, Xbox announced that Xbox Game Pass Ultimate will now cost $29.99 per month, a decision that sparked debate among subscribers. The update comes with two renamed options—Essential and Premium—which alter the available features and do not include day-one game releases. The move came after another adjustment in 2024, which phased out the Console plan in exchange for Standard and Core tiers. At that time, Xbox permitted existing Console subscribers to retain their subscription at the same price of $11 per month with all perks, including access to games on launch day.
“Players who are presently enrolled in Xbox Game Pass for Console and have automatic payment renewal enabled can continue their membership,” an Xbox spokesperson stated. “If players turn off automatic payment renewal, or their membership expires, they will have to select between the Essential, Premium, Ultimate, or PC Game Pass plans when resubscribing.”
The perks and pricing of the Console plan will not be changing, according to Xbox: “Day one games are available with Ultimate and PC subscriptions, as well as for members who still have an active Game Pass for Console. Players who are currently enrolled in the Console plan and have automatic payment renewal turned on can keep their subscription at $10.99 per month.”
Upon inquiry, an Xbox spokesperson declined to specify for what duration legacy Console subscriptions will remain active for current subscribers.
Be sure to check if you hold this golden ticket before canceling your subscription, as it will be impossible to get back into it once you opt out.
