A substantial Pacific bluefin tuna created waves at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, achieving a record-breaking bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2m; £2.4m) during the venue's inaugural auction of the calendar year.
The top offer for the 243kg fish was placed by the operator of a popular sushi restaurant group, which manages locations across the country and internationally.
"The year's tuna heralds a prosperous start," stated the company president, a notable figure at the traditional January sale.
Dubbed the Tuna King, this businessman is famous for making record bids for premium bluefin tuna at these high-profile January auctions.
After the auction, the winner told reporters that he was "surprised at the winning bid," adding, "I expected we would be able to purchase it a little at a lower price, but the price escalated rapidly."
This most recent acquisition tops his own notable purchases:
Despite once commenting that he thought he "did too much," he has now managed to shatter his personal record once again.
The inaugural auction at the Tokyo fish market is typically characterized by exceptionally high prices. In the prior year, the initial tuna was bought for 207 million yen by a different food company, which indicated the fish would be featured at its eateries nationwide.
The frenetic energy at the fish market during these pre-sunrise auctions has become a popular tourist attraction in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which began around 05:00 local time, was equally bustling.
The multi-million-dollar tuna was shortly thereafter prepared for diners at the entrepreneur's sushi restaurants soon after the auction concluded.
"I believe like I've started the year in a auspicious way after consuming something so fortune-bringing as the year gets underway," remarked one elated diner.
