TikTok Content Creators Fueling Parallel Trade for Unlicensed Weight-Loss Medication

An underground economy for unlicensed slimming drugs is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and sellers on messaging platforms, according to recent findings.

Investigational Drug Acquiring Popularity Online

The experimental drug, which remains in clinical trials, is being promoted by online personalities for its alleged fat-burning properties. Viewers are encouraged to contact these profiles directly for source information, while also receiving discount codes.

Thriving Commerce on Messaging Platforms

Separately, a flourishing market exists on messaging services, where groups with thousands of members share comparison photos, injection guides and claims of rapid UK delivery. Sellers market the substance there before directing customers to other platforms for purchases.

Understanding The Experimental Drug

Retatrutide is an investigational injectable developed by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The treatment affects three intestinal hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, GIP and glucagon. Preliminary studies suggest it could help patients reduce up to 25% of their total weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the drug is being hailed online as the next Ozempic.

Medical Professionals Voice Worries

Nevertheless, physicians and chemists have warned that the sale of what is still an unapproved drug in the United Kingdom is worrisome and could lead to individuals injecting products of uncertain source.

Several professionals stated the demand for the experimental drug could be linked to the rising cost of licensed weight loss products such as Mounjaro.

Legal Status and Enforcement

Marketing retatrutide on social media or Telegram is prohibited in the UK, as it is an unlicensed drug that must not be promoted or supplied for personal consumption under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.

Some content creators attempt to sidestep the rules by referring to the drug as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a restricted drug, but advertising and supply can still violate medicines, marketing, and consumer regulations, potentially leading to fines, legal action or imprisonment.

Platform Reaction and Material Removal

According to the social media company, the service has removed problematic content and prohibited related hashtags and query recommendations. The company stated it was dedicated to maintaining the platform secure and investing in strengthening enforcement strategies.

Digital Trading Activities

Investigations also found communities with up to 9,000 participants marketing retatrutide using Telegram's built-in search feature, which operates like a public directory. Typing “retatrutide” instantly brings up channels with thousands of members, populated with photos of slimming results, glowing testimonials and step-by-step instructions for preparing or administering at residence.

After moments of entering one group, a vendor shared contact information, where the majority of purchases take place. The vendor provided an instruction manual and guaranteed shipping within 48 hours. When asked whether the substance was genuine, one seller responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a photo of a alleged laboratory certificate. None asked about body mass, medical conditions or previous experience.

Item Information and Costs

Inside these groups, messages display black plastic packages with postal service labels, stating to include fresh supplies. One message stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Buyers can select between dry substance containers, mixed at residence with sterile water, or pre-filled pens usually sold at 160 pounds for 20mg. When questioned how long a injector should last, sellers give contradictory responses ranging from a several days to “depends on your body”.

Service Oversight and Safety Actions

A spokesperson for Telegram said it actively moderated harmful content on its platform including material that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization added that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Medical Expert Warnings

“Individuals are administering substances they cannot confirm. Although the science behind retatrutide is valid, these digital versions may not contain what they advertise,” stated Jason Murphy, the head of pharmacy at Chemist4U.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of an online medical service linked the surge in interest to current cost increases for approved weight-loss medications such as Mounjaro. “With costs rising, patients are turning to social media. But fake treatments are highly dangerous. You can’t be certain what’s contained or whether the environment they were made in was clean,” she explained.

Her staff has already seen patients injured by personal administration from unverified sources. “We understand the disappointment, but buying from Telegram or WhatsApp is taking chances with your health,” said Wyllie. “These materials could be contaminated or improperly measured.”

Producer Statement

A spokesperson from the pharmaceutical company said retatrutide was in third stage clinical trials and had not been evaluated or authorized by any government authority anywhere in the world. “Therefore at this point no one can sell [it] for personal consumption,” they explained, noting that any item “misleadingly claiming itself as a company experimental substance not yet authorized … may subject users to possibly significant health risks”.
